I’m a big fan of Sam Smith’s pubs, which are a chain run by the eponymous brewery from Yorkshire, and only serve their own beers. You won’t find Foster’s here; instead try the Alpine Lager. Similarly, I rate their stout as better than Guinness and Murphy’s. Since they use their own brews, everything is ridiculously cheap, but the pubs themselves aren’t like a crappy Wetherspoons. They’re usually old, characterful and very individual. I really like the Cittie of Yorke on High Holborn, with its big beer hall out the back, and it’s in fact where the girlfriend and I had our first date. Yep, I’m a charmer. I knew of a good few of their pubs near my office and where I went to uni, but as ever the internet delivers in terms of mapping all of them. I smell a pub crawl in the near future.
