Underworld - Dirty Epic
A classic Underworld track. Dark, moody, with a pounding beat and great little melody. The lyrics are standard Underworld fare: muttered, meandering, indecipherable and possibly nonsensical.
For me, Underworld have gone downhill since Darren Emerson left after they released Beaucoup Fish. Since then, the albums have had less of a dancey feel to them, which I always thought was their strongest point. Everyone knows Underworld from tracks like Born Slippy, but is was never the case that their albums were full of that kind of track. There was always a softer, more mellow side to their albums, illustrated by tracks like Cups and Jumbo, but this has come to the fore since Emerson left.
Saying that, their latest album, Oblivion With Bells, is pretty solid, with Beautiful Burnout as the strongest track. Hopefully this signifies a return to form, and we’ll see some more new material before the year’s out.
