[H]e’s a very modern politician, one who, in the absence of core convictions, trades on his personality and celebrity instead. … [I]f his comments ever generated a whiff of controversy, he would backtrack quicker than you could say ‘Recant, recant!’ … In reality, Boris looks like he will follow in ‘Red’ Ken’s footsteps: he’ll be green, obsessed with crime, and he won’t think twice about instituting new bans on boozing, debauchery or anything else that might damage ‘London’s reputation’. Voting in the London mayoral elections was my first participation in the democratic process, even if I did it by post while on the beach in Portugal. And I have to say that the outcome has disappointed me. Possibly even gutted me. I voted for Ken, on the basis of the improvements he has made to this city over the last few years, and what he continues to propose to do. It’s sort of like supporting a sports team I suppose. You want your candidate/team to win, and it’s a touch humiliating when they lose, because of the connection/affiliation you have personally invested in. And I am genuinely depressed that Boris won. The man’s a buffoon, and beneath that he’s a right-wing authoritarian who is seriously going to mess with this city. And, as the quotes above show, he’s very much a show politician: all image and no balls. Epitomising what is wrong with politics nowadays. Consider this my rant post for the day.
Will the real Boris please stand up?
