My name is Rob. I live in London, and tend to spend far too much time either online or in places which serve alcohol. Either way I entertain myself. I'm pretty self-critical, very open, and prone to strong opinions. I post just about everything that comes to mind, good or bad.

Well, thanks to the House Meeting last night, we now have a Cleaning Rota. We are truly special.

It works as follows: There are 3 communal areas in the house: living room/hallway; kitchen; garden. There are 3 housemates, so we take one each, every month.

But the weird thing is, we leave it until the last week of each month to do the housework, so we end up leaving in a clean house for one week, and a dirty house for 3 weeks each month. What, I ask, is the point?

Why not just clean/tidy as you go, wherever you are? Apparently the issue is responsibility. The other two, one in particular, think that certain tasks won’t get done unless someone has the responsibility to do it.

Case in point being putting the bins out every Wednesday morning. Usually, I remember to do it, as I’m out of the house each day before the other two are even out of bed, but last Wednesday I plum forgot. I was still ill, in a rush, and just didn’t do it.

‘No worries’, I thought, ‘one of those two will see the pile of rubbish bags and recycling boxes in the kitchen and do it.’ No such luck. So now we have an even bigger pile of rubbish bags in our back garden, smelling a bit, and two overflowing boxes of recycling in the kitchen.

Oh, and those two are away tonight, so guess who has to put the bins out?! ;)

Yes, I’m whingeing, but I tried to bring up some of these points last night and was basically outvoted in favour of what I see as a stupid system. But, as the girlfriend said in a text (I whinged to her too), “in my experience rotas never work 4 long.”

Here’s hoping.
