Quelle surprise? Just when I thought that cycling was getting fully clean, this happens. They’re not even able to use the same excuse/defence as when Beltran tested positive last week. The general noise around him is that he was the last of the old guard, being 37 years old, and the new generation of riders were completely clean, being fed up with a tainted sport. Evidently, that one’s been blown out of the water now. The sport is still unquestionably tainted by drug/steroid use, and I find it harder every year to take it seriously. Considering that the TdF is such a difficult event, my view (which I don’t consider to be minority) is harsh on the 90+% of competitors who are clean and want to race fairly. The Tour is quickly losing its lustre. Incidentally, Beltran is the fifth rider to test positive after being a member of Lance Armstrong’s team during his seven Tour wins. I’m categorically not stating that Armstrong used drugs, but the Tour is very much a team event, and his team did a lot of work to get him each yellow jersey and keep him in it. So even the greats can be tarnished retrospectively by drug use.
Some things never change: Second Tour de France rider tests positive
