Rob, Rambling - A lot of things interest me...

Inspired by allthiscanbeyours via smartblonde

Allthiscanbeyours posted a couple of pictures of an art installation on Crosby Beach, Liverpool, without a huge amount of explanation as to what they were, other than that they were “dozens of stationary, zombie-like statues, all facing out to sea in various locations. To say it’s a creepy scene is an understatement.”

This piece is by an artist called Antony Gormley, who is best known for his Angel Of The North sculpture. Pretty much all of Gormley’s work is associated with the human form, and most of his more recent installations/sculptures have been based on casts of his own body.

The many figures on the beach are all identical casts of Gormley, as were the figures in the temporary installation Event Horizon in London a couple of years ago. Those figures were placed on the corners of buildings, overlooking the surrounding area, and were freaky as fuck to see out of the corner of your eye. My university was in that area, and I used to see them as I walked over Waterloo Bridge. Even though I eventually found out what they were (i.e. not human), it still made me do a double take each time.

Incidentally, the installation in London was temporary, but as far as I know the beach in Liverpool is permanent. The cool thing there is that the figures get covered up by the tides. The furthest out are only visible at the very lowest tides, whilst the ones closest to shore barely get wet. As the tide goes out each day, more and more are uncovered, and vice-versa when the tide comes back in.
