The Streets - Let’s Push Things Forward
Via boredintheburbs
The single song which got me into The Streets.
I hadn’t heard ‘Has It Come To This’ before stumbling across LPTF on one of the MTV channels when it first came out years and years ago. I was instantly hooked on the way in which Skinner just tells the tale of everyday life in Britain, along with the fairly minimalist tracks behind the lyrics.
Skinner’s lyrics are mesmerising in their simplicity. He doesn’t need to claim to be shagging all the birds or having all of the trappings of fame (although he addresses the latter in his third album ‘Hardest Way…’). He just tells it like it is, about how life really happens for people of our generation and our way of living. Things happen, we deal with it and move on.
‘Original Pirate Material’ is one of my favourite ever albums, but ‘A Grand Don’t Come For Free’ is even better. To take a relatively normal-ish week (OK, so finding out your missus is cheating on you and losing a grand isn’t a normal week for everyone) and turn it into a collection of fantastic songs is absolute genius. Everyone knows the tear-jerker that is ‘Dry Your Eyes’, but tracks like ‘Such A Twat’ and ‘Empty Cans’ fit the story perfectly.
But nothing can compare to the masterpiece that is ‘Blinded By The Lights’. Incredible video, great beat and fantastic lyrics. I may have to post it when I get home this evening…
