Old glasses

I picked up a new pair of glasses last night, and have spent today trying to get used to them. They’re quite a different style to my old ones, which I’ve been wearing for at least five or six years.

The new ones aren’t as tall, which means that when I look down or up, it’s much easier to see past the edges of them. This is a tad disturbing, but thankfully my prescription isn’t all that strong anyway, and it’s only really in one eye, so I’m already barely noticing it.

What I am noticing, though, is the frames in my peripheral vision to the sides. The red edging on the frames is visible from the inside, and the arms are pretty chunky, so I sort of have these red squares at the edge of my peripheral vision when I look to the left or right. Again, something I’ll just have to get used to.

I wanted to change my look, because it really has been the same for a few years now, save for the coming and going of various beards. A chunkier frame is a start, although no-one at work noticed today. :(

Seriously, just look at her. Utterly stunning.

Waiting for a bus last night at the bottom end of Putney High Street, I snapped a few photos as the traffic went past. I love this kind of long exposure shot of lights at night-time, and have hundreds of them from various places across London over the last few years.

The Thames, at Putney

We had another dumping of snow overnight, a couple of inches in the Wimbledon area, and it was still coming down pretty heavily when I left the flat this morning. As ever, the snow meant a juxtaposition between “Ain’t it pretty?” and “Why is it taking so long to get anywhere?!”.

Temperatures are just above zero, so it probably won’t hang around too long, which hopefully means fewer lethal pavements, but it’ll be a shame to see it disappear quickly.

I really like the photo looking along the Thames at Putney. Usually you can see for a hell of a long way from that point, but today it was bloody foggy, and the snow was fall quite intensely too.

Twice-Baked Potatoes

When I can be bothered, I’m a half-decent cook. It’s just not that often that I can be bothered…

Anyways, examples A and B are above: cottage pie on Saturday, and twice-baked potatoes tonight. Easy, yep, but tasty!

Also, I like potatoes.

Celebrity Big Brother started on Sunday night, with the usual cross-section of fading and forgotten film- (a Baldwin, I forget which one), TV- (some actress from Coronation St), and pop-stars (Dane Bowers, Sisqo), along with some complete non-entities who are only semi-famous because of their bedroom antics. Oh, and a total legend in Vinnie Jones.

A couple of the housemates have connections to big-boobed fame-whore Jordan, which means that the Daily Star can have her (or at least her name) on the front page every single day for the duration of the show, despite her not being anywhere near the TV show or doing anything newsworthy at all.

And it’s not like these “news” stories need to be about actual facts at all. The Daily Star has a history of, you know, just making shit up, especially about Jordan. They were recently censured by the PCC for a story published (on the front page, of course!) last summer that claimed Jordan was pregnant. She wasn’t.

During the launch show on Sunday night (yes, I watched it), after the two guys connected with Jordan were announced, I said to the girlfriend “Right, that’s the Daily Star’s front page sorted for the next fortnight”.

And, wouldn’t you just know it, three days into Celebrity Big Brother and the lead story on the Daily Star’s front page each day has prominently featured Jordan.

Newspapers are so predictable sometimes…

EDIT: Now including Thursday-Saturday’s papers as well.

A few photos from Iceland. They don’t even begin to tell the story of just how amazing a time we had, or how fantastic a place it is. Absolutely stunning views in every direction, and untouched landscapes for miles around.

It was dark...

I spent yesterday evening in my absolute favourite watering hole in London, Gordon’s Wine Bar. It’s a tiny little place down by Embankment station, run by a French family, and serves nothing but wine and sherry.

It’s underground, with some tables in a really dark, small, cramped, cave-esque hole that you can see in the third picture, behind the couple that were eating each other’s faces all night long. Somehow, we booked a table for eight, and ended up in what was pretty much a cage at the end of the room, which was brilliant.

The wine there is fantastic, and we got through a stack of bottles between us. A particularly good Malbec was my favourite, but then I really like Malbecs in general. We also had a few plates of some great cheese, with some awesome brie and a good chunk of gouda.

As one of the guys pointed out, it was decadent.

Londoner, thinking and writing far too much about far too many random things. Wannabe photo-/videographer of my life. More likely to be found propping up a bar somewhere.

I also write about football.
